On 30th October, Mr McQuade from Central Fire and Rescue Service came to Dollar Academy to talk to us about fire safety.
All the Junior 1s gathered in the Captain’s room in the Maguire building, where Mr McQuade started by giving a speech informing us how important fire safety is. He told us to pester our parents to buy smoke alarms and make sure the batteries are replaced every year. I’m sure everyone has followed Mr McQuade’s instructions and made a fire escape plan.
He then showed us two very important DVDs. One showed us never to play with fireworks, as it can result in serious injuries or, possibly, death. The other showed us a number of mistakes that a family made, which, in the middle of the night, started a fire.
Next was the fun part. Isla Banerji was offered the great opportunity of wearing the clothes of a fireman. I couldn’t contain my laughter once she had the whole outfit on!
After that, Darcy Elles had the chance to demonstrate the action: “Stop, drop and roll”, used when your clothes are on fire.
After an enjoyable morning, I felt Mr McQuade had put the fire safety message across very well.

What with Guy Fawkes night just a week away, what better time to have a firefighter coming to Dollar Academy to talk to the Junior 1 classes about the importance of fire safety.
Mr Gordon McQuade was the firefighter kind enough to come to the Academy’s Captain’s Room on Thursday 30th October and explain the regulations of fire safety. Before the presentation got under way there was excited chatter around the room but when the presentation began you could hear a pin drop.
Fire fighter McQuade talked to us about the dangers of fireworks and I would like to thank him for making this one of the most worthwhile lessons the Junior 1s have had. The message was clear: ‘Have a fire plan. It could save your life.’
