Knockhill Speedfair 2008

This event took place on June 7th at Scotland’s motorsport centre and for the first time Dollar Academy pupils were given the opportunity to become race marshals for the day. Mr Peter Stanhope, a Dollar parent himself, frequently helps at such events, and suggested that Dollar Academy pupils might wish to gain some hands on experience at real motorsport events.

The Speedfair itself was a rally event involving a number of “classic” vehicles including Hillman Imps, MG Midgets, MGB’s, Mini Coopers, and an Audi Quattro, which proved to be a real head turner.

Rallies differ from races in that cars compete one after another, and the time taken to complete the track is then recorded. Dollar pupils were given various duties including car timing, trackside observation and cone repositioning.  There was also the opportunity to observe, for free, the other races that took place that day, which included Formula Ford and Classic Ferrari races.

The members of staff at Knockhill were so impressed with how positive and helpful the pupils were that they rewarded them with free Go-Karting vouchers.

Knockhill very much appreciates the input from young volunteers, and anybody interested in any future event is welcome to contact Mr Cochrane in the Technology Department.
