  Trips & Visits - Iceland 2009

Iceland Trip
2 -5 April 2009

Iceland is a remarkable country with landscapes and geographical phenomena like nowhere else. The huge forces at work here have left the landscape dotted with fissures and volcanoes, geysers and lava flows which make Iceland such a unique destination.
Our destination, Southwest Iceland, holds some prime examples of the island's famous volcanic scenery, and in a few days it is possible to visit a variety of stunning locations and experience true Icelandic hospitality. The tour offers just the right combination of remote coastline, classic waterfalls, craters and geysers, hot springs and wild mountainous landscapes, giving the perfect introduction to the ‘Land of Ice and Fire’. Highlights will include:

  • Standing astride the Mid Atlantic Ridge where the North American and Eurasian plates are being wrenched apart.
  •  Bathing in the Blue Lagoon, an outdoor geothermal spa with a temperature averaging 40oC.
  • The Krýsuvík Mud Puddles with its fumeroles and bubbling mud pools.
  • A visit to the greenhouse town of Hveragerði where it is possible to grow vegetables in the sub Arctic, followed by a trip to the Kerið Crater, a distinctive volcanic caldera.
  • Observing the eruptions of geysers which throw jets of water 30 metres into the air.
  • The Gulfoss waterfall, a dramatic waterfall located in a deep canyon.
  • Flight to the volcanic island of Heimay in the Westman Islands and a scramble up the volcano, which last erupted in 1973, for spectacular 3600 views.  A tour of the island highlights the vulnerability of living with Natural Hazards.
  • The Thingyellir World Heritage Site, sitting on top of a major fault line with waterfalls, immense fissures and lakes.
  • Each day will end with a relaxing dip in a geothermal pool.
